El influjo extranjero en la medicina española de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX: una evaluación cuantitativa (2009)

unapi

The aim of the present study is to provide an overview of Spanish-language versions of medical texts translated from other languages in the period 1850 to 1900. The results speak for themselves: 1035 works translated over this half-century period, 525 authors, a predominance of translations from French, a total of 439 translators, over 300 editors, a wide dispersion of places of edition and, regarding the subject-matter of the texts, practically all the disciplines are dealt with. The present study provides an original contribution to existing knowledge of communication between Spanish and foreign medicine in the period studied. The importance of the translations is unquestionable, covering practically all the branches of medical knowledge of the time. The importance of the role played by the publishers, booksellers and translators of the period is highlighter with regard to the diffusion of this knowledge. Spanish medicine received a marked influx from, above all, our French neighbours.
