The three essays in this issue tackle the question of the assimilation of non-native materia medica and medicines in the early modern world, most pointedly in terms of a conflict between indigenous and foreign substances and pharmaceuticals. In so doing, they bring to light the processes through which such products were integrated into a different, that is, new context.
