At a colloquium held in May 2007 at Boston College to honor John E. Murdoch on the occasion of his eightieth birthday, some of the authors represented in this volume concluded that what had transpired was of sufficient novelty and interest to warrant a volume of essays reflecting on the present state of studies in early science. Many, but not all of those present at the colloquium and represented in this volume were former students of Murdoch's at Harvard and the papers in this volume only partly overlap with the papers presented at the colloquium. Nevertheless the very diversity of this volume is itself in part a testament to Murdoch's practice of encouraging his students to pursue their own interests, however distant from his own research they might be. The present volume shows that the current oversimplified picture of medieval science is in some measure a self-fulfilling prophecy, resulting from a historiographical tradition that has culled out factors that were not obvious precursors to the grand themes of the Scientific Revolution as envisaged by mid-twentieth-century scholars. In reality, the canonical picture of the Scientific Revolution itself needs drastic rewriting, but before this can be done properly, the Middle Ages must be intensively revisited both for its own sake and for what it had to contribute to later science
