Medical adver t isements in English newspapers between 1690 and 1750 wer e examined f rom the aspect of gender. Subjects considered wer e wh o read the adver t isements, wh o bought the products adver t ised, what condi t ions and cures wer e descr ibed, what references ther e wer e to wome n and wher e and how the product s wer e sold.The analysis shows that wome n cont inued to be ver y much involved in health care at a t ime when ther e was growing pressure f rom male professional physicians to establish super ior i t y over popular healers, wh o wer e of ten female.
