C'est au médecin anglais, Wi l l iam Harvey, que revient le mér i t e de la découver t e de la ci rculat ion du sang, qu'il expliqua dans son "De mot u cordis" , en 1628. Cet t e innovat ion dans l'art de la médecine suscita une campagne d'opposi t ion acharnée. Il se forma deux clans opposés : les circulateurs et les ant i -ci rculateurs. Cinquante années furent nécessaires pour assurer le t r iomphe des circulateurs. René Descartes (1596-1650) f i t cependant except ion ; il admet tai t cer tes la ci rculat ion sanguine tel le que l'avait démont rée Harvey mais il réfutai t la systole et la diastole, générat r ices du mouvement ci rculatoi re du sang. Selon sa doct r ine, c'était la chaleur du coeur qui étai t la cause des bat tements cardiaques. La doct r ine de Descartes -le "car tésianisme" -fit école. Près de cent ans plus tard, des médecins de renom soutenaient encore la doct r ine car tésienne. Il faudra at tendre la seconde moi t i é du XIXe siècle pour que la vér i t é sur le mouvement du coeur et la ci rculat ion du sang, telle que nous la concevons aujourd'hui soi t , une fois pour toutes, déf ini t ivement établie.
