From 1572 onward European society was exposed to an astonishing succession of novelties in the heavens. As we can see, Kepler's life (1571--1630) was accompanied by the succession of these phenomena, to some of which (the novae of 1600 and 1604 and the comets of 1607 and 1618) he dedicated works, both in German and in Latin. In what follows, we intend first to outline briefly the reaction all over Europe to these astonishing phenomena, focusing on the impact this had on the traditional relationship between the disciplines of astronomy, natural philosophy, and theology. We shall then consider Kepler's own explanation of these phenomena (mostly of the nova of 1604) and their role in his elaboration of a unified view of nature that implied a new relation between these disciplines.
