Inmediatamente después de interesarse por el magnetismo animal, y seguramente como consecuencia de dicho interés, E.T.A. Hoffmann hizo de los autómatas personajes centrales en algunas de sus obras más notables. El presente trabajo pretende mostrar cómo este interés revela la actitud crítica del escritor hacia un modo de concebir al ser humano que, desarrollándose paralelamente a una medicina basada en la anatomía, había desembocado en el siglo XVIII en un estado de opinión que tiene su más acabada expresión en L'homme machina, de J.O. De La Mettrie. Estos relatos, como los dedicados al magnetismo animal, nos parecen hoy un grito de alerta frente a una de las consecuencias de esa concepción mecánica del ser humano: el despliegue del biopoder, o de la biopolítica, conceptos formulados por Foucault en sus últimas obras; pero también frente a los riesgos que entraña la voluntad prometeica de la modernidad.
