This article investigates the medieval origns of hte main pusle diagnostic method in comteporary chinese medicine known as san bu method, which requres physicians to examine the mai on the wrist at the three locations cum guan chi. The article provides evidence that this body technique grew out of an earlier Chinese one, which appears to have aimed at investigating the qualities of yin and yang. The article furthermore posits that this method was diecisvely trnasformed in medieval times presumably due to the impact of early Tibetan pulse diagnostic practices; it became framed in a numerology of three. the article which draws on detailed texual analysese of medieval manuscripts, on visual evidence and also on psychophysical research, furthermore highlights how misunderstandings can constructively contribute to cultural communication.
