The purpose of this article is to investigate the way in which scholars, who sometimes had no experience of war, managed to demonstrate that their skills were becoming useful to master-warriors. I shall argue that the way they taught mathematics was in itself a device to gain trust, and to achieve a certain social status despite a lack of real experience. I shall also claim that at the same time, for their patrons, speaking the language of élite texts (Euclid, Archimedes, etc.) was gratifying because of the dominant humanist culture. In other words, the scope of the following pages is to understand how a number of authors versed in military science mediated between more élite, learned walks of life, and more mechanical activities and personnel.
