Lamy, Jérôme (Author)
The determination of longitude at sea was a major scientific question during the modern times. This article focuses on how the Jesuits taught that topic in their treatises of hydrography in the 17th and 18th centuries. The analysis of these works reveals the methods they recommended and their instrumental choices. The originality of the Jesuits' treatises was based on an acute attention to the most recent developments in astronomy, a permanent tension between practice and precision, and the promotion of the magnet's variation as a method.
