In this paper it is argued that Hippocrates of Chios was the first to apply in geometry a kind of indirect proof called "apagoge" (reduction). Apagoge seems to be an early stage of the geometrical method of analysis and synthesis. Finally, it is argued that the hypothetical method of the geometers, to which Plato refers to in the Meno, is the apagoge of Hippocrates of Chios.
