The first part of the paper advances across various temporal levels to trace back the precedents of Torricelli's centennial, that of his birth (1908), in the atmosphere of faith and optimism that characterised Giolitti's Italy, and that of the discovery of the barometer (1944), during the grim times of World War II, showing how the scientist's figure was chosen to represent a sort of origin, a trend, a tradition and a shared memory. Now that our relationship with the past has become more problematic, though, what does commemorating Torricelli mean? Departing from this question, the paper's second part follows the scientist's journey and career, from the beginning when he proudly introduced himself to Galileo, to his affirmation on the European scene, giving voice to the texts and correspondence, but also attempting to interpret their manysignificant silences in the difficult times that followed his teacher's conviction. This new exploration of Torricelli's universe thus uncovers reasons and motives that are still alive and current today: in particular, the ethics of knowledge, the rigorous and precise style of thought that emerges in Torricelli's writings in a language that combines elegance and precision, forcefully propose anew the problem of the ''two cultures'', that is of the relationship between scientific culture and human sciences.
