Galileo, Guiducci and the Engineer Bartolotti on the Bisenzio River (2008)

unapi

In the autumn of 1630, the floods of the Bisenzio River provoked a heated controversy between the landowners of the plain along this tributary of the Arno. Alessandro Bartolotti, suggested digging a new straight riverbed. While the owners of the land east of the Bisenzio eagerly supported Bartolotti's plan, those on the west felt menaced. A close friend of Galileo, Mario Guiducci, was one of the leaders of the opposition. Early in December, Galileo's science ofmotionwas questioned in a gathering attended by some influential members of the two parties. The cousins Niccolo` and Andrea Arrighetti, Galileo's followers, found themselves arguing for or against the relevance of a proposition of Galileo. About two weeks later, Galileo was officially asked to give his advice on the issue. In January 1631, he sent a long report on the Bisenzio affair. After a critical discussion of Bartolott?s ideas, Galileo approved the solution of the engineer Fantoni. On the basis of Galileo's report, Fantoni has traditionally been considered the author of an anonymous paper included in Ms.Gal. 73 (ff. 26r-29r). In this article I argue, in the first place, that Guiducci wrote this paper and that he borrowed some of its arguments from Castelli and Galileo. Then, I show that Andrea Arrighetti tried to give coherence to Bartolotti's engineering science by turning to the general question of resistances to motion. Finally, I draw attention to Galileo's preliminary explanation in the Bisenzio report of some parts of the theory of accelerated motion. A clue that explains this curious way of proceeding may perhaps be provided by Galileo's concern for the publication of the Dialogo.
