Galileo in America: From Empiricism to Idealism and Back? (2006)

unapi

In the twentieth century, dominant American social and political values were reflected in Galileo studies, especially studies of his scientific method. Whereas at the beginning of the century Galileo was seen as an empiricist, whose conclusions about motion were reached through experiment, during the Cold War, under the tutelage of Alexandre Koyré, he was seen as a theorist who used experiments only to demonstrate his conclusions. Since the 1970s, this image of Galileo has slowly changed. Although influences from Philosophy of Science and Sociology of Science have been important, it has been the renewed interest in Galile?s experiments - whether actual or in thought - and their social context that has begun to redress the balance.
