La valeur de la connaissance approchée. L'épistémologie de l'approximation d'Émile Borel (2008)

unapi

The value of approximate knowledge. Émile Borel's philosophy of approximation The philosophy of approximation is rapidly developing as an area within the philosophy of science and mathematics, owing to the reflections on the growing use of computers in physics. At the beginning of the 20th century, Borel, Duhem, and Poincaré had already explored most of issues under discussion today in their works on the applicability of mathematics to physics. Borel, above all, strove to display the value and range of scientific knowledge. He gave striking examples of approximate knowledge and drew important conclusions from them about the nature of physics and mathematics. This paper presents Borel's theses and their implications. Keywords : Epistemology, applicability of mathematics, approximation, Émile Borel
