The Similitude of Equimultiples in the Definition of Noncontinuous Proportion in Campanus' Edition of Euclid's Elements : An Obstacle in the Reception of the Theory of Proportions in the Middle Ages This article shows, via an example, the complexity of the situation in which the editor of ancient texts is sometimes placed when having to choose between diverging variants of different manuscripts. The example is taken from the edition of Campanus' Elementa by H. L. L. Busard. We discuss Busard's choice of the adverb simul in the definition of proportionality in Book V, despite the fact that the oldest manuscripts contain the adjective similes. Behind this choice lies the role that equimultiples play in the definition --- simultaneity or similitude. We also ask what Campanus' understanding of the theory of proportionality could have been. Keywords : Euclid, Campanus, proportionality, Middle Ages
