L'arithmétique pratique en France au seuil de la Renaissance: formes et acteurs d'un enseignement (2008)

unapi

The arithmetic trade treaties produced in Western Europe between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries have clear educational vocation. They reflect the need for a mathematical training for merchants and testify at the same time the existence of an education to meet first at the request of a party of the urban population. How and by whom such instruction was offered in France? The archives and institutional sources are virtually silent. With regard to treaties, they give us some information that seems to support the hypothesis of the constitution, still embryonic, of a professional education. Particularly dynamic in the Midi, practical mathematics develop outside the University, although not cut off from the scholar world, since they created a new field of study and reflection, which also owes a lot to academics.
