Historians of science discussing the variations in cometary theory in the mid- 1660s and beyond have traditionally focused on astronomers in England and on the Continent, north of the Alps.8 However, the contributions of the Italians to the cometary observations and discussions of 1664 and 1665 are highly significant for our understanding of seventeenth-century natural philosophy. Indeed, I contend that Borelli's observations, in particular, provide a case-study analysis of how astronomical claims were constructed and their significance negotiated and altered, in mid- to late seventeenth-century Europe.
