The Making of a Tychonic Cosmology: Cristoforo Borri and the Development of Tycho Brahe's Astronomical System (2008)

unapi

Cristoforo Borri (1583--1632) was one of the Tychonic astronomers who played a part in such a cosmological debate within the Jesuit order.8 Acknowledged as one of the first Jesuits publicly to defend the Tychonic world system,9 while he was teaching philosophy (and most likely mathematics) at the Milan Jesuit College of Brera in 1612, Borri was regularly engaged in astronomical observations and debates throughout his life, up to the publication of his Collecta astronomica ex doctrina in Lisbon in 1631. In this paper, my purpose is to analyse the development of Borri's cosmological ideas, relating it to his activities in Italy, East Asia, and Portugal.10 More generally, I seek to draw attention to the development of Tychonism in the early seventeenth century, an issue that I believe the current history of astronomy has yet to appreciate in full.
