The paper has three main themes. These are: (1) The crucial importance of fashioning and refining new sorts of astrophysical techniques, especially distance indicators. (2) The increasing importance of the very largest optical telescopes in extragalactic astronomy and the consequently leading part played by observatories in the west of the United States. The small number of observers at the handful of institutions with the biggest telescopes had huge advantages over their colleagues elsewhere. (3) The rapidly growing part played by radio astronomy after the Second World War.
