The Coherence of Magical-Herbal and Analogous Recipes (2007)

unapi

Although it is no longer routinely assumed that the ancient herbal-magical tradition was "irrational", most attempts to defend it have emphasized the possible pharmacetuical effects of individual herbs with the iimiplication that this was fundamentally an empirical practise. Others have invoked speical theories, such as the ultimately Stoic doctrine of sumpatheia. Neither approach is entirely wrong, but they need to be supplemented by consdieration of the nature of the experitse commanded by practitioners. the rationality of the magical-herbal tradition, whether for healing or malign ends, can be defended only by situation its practitioners within a specific tradition of practice. We can thus adapt GER Lloyd's account o ancient medical expertise to this area.
