Ennius, fr. XCVI is the oldest Latin witness of the Great Bear's use as a night clock. This paper deals on 1. Eurpides' corresponding passage, where the hour of the night is indicated by the position of Sirius; 2, Varro, the source of the ennian fragment (most relevant to clarify latin images o fthe seven stars); 3, the passages of latin poets concerning the Great Bear's use as a night clock and in conclusion, a new excegetical hypothesis for the Ennian passage is proposed.
