The Early History of Telephony in Manchester, 1877--1898 (2007)

unapi

Important developments in the history of the telephone took place in Manchester in the first twenty years of the technology's existence. Work for the development of the forthcoming Manchester Communicates exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester revealed gaps in the existing knowledge about the early history of the telephone. This prompted further research into the complicated sequence of companies and individuals involved in providing telephone services and in manufacturing apparatus; this article seeks to explore that sequence of events. It also looks briefly at the growth in users as reflected in the Manchester and Salford trade directories. Other authors have produced overviews of the development of the early British telephone system and only material relevant to the picture in Manchester will be covered here.1
