Alexander von Humboldt fondly referred to himself as "half an American". He knew both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison personally and was also a good friend of Albert Gallatin. Especially after 1835, Humboldt became a well-informed confident supporter of many Berlin-based American diplomats whose respect and admiration he enjoyed. By no means, however, was the relationship one-sided. Humboldt needed the diplomatic channels of the American legation for sending letters of introduction, books, and/or questions related to his own American researches. Many American visitorys came to see the famous explorer in either Berlin or Potsdam, and the American legation frequently helped to facilitate the personal contacts.
