By no means, however, was the relationship one-sided. Humboldt needed the diplomatic channels of the American legation for sending letters of introduction, books, and/or questions related to his own American researches. Many American visitorys came to see the famous explorer in either Berlin or Potsdam, and the American legation frequently helped to facilitate the personal contacts.
