When Alexander von Humboldt returned from Paris to Berlin in 1827 he wrote with prescience that Berlin would soon emerge as one of the most important venues for the study of higher mathematics. This contribution describes Humboldt's leading role in the realization of his vision. In order to better clarify Humboldt's particular contributions the paper commences with an analysis of the state of mathematics in Berlin prior to 1827. As early as 1823 the Prussian Minister of Culture, in a letter to King Friedrich Wilhelm III, had called for immediate action to improve the deplorable situation. Among the suggestions the minister put forth in this document are included the following: calling Carl Friedrich Gauss to the Berlin Academy of Sciences and the establishment of a polytechnical school.
