Alexander von Humboldt played an integral role in helping to expand the collections of the Berlin Zoological Museum during the directorships of Johann Karl Illiger and Martin Heinrich Lichtenstein. First, Humboldt's close connections to Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg facilitated the acquisition of the latter's micropalaeontological collections. Secondly, Humboldt's support of Johannes Müller's Physiological researches at the Anatomical-zootomical Museum in Berlin is discussed. Lastly Humboldt's friendship with Emil du Bois-Reymond and its role in the exchange of scientific information between the French and Prussian capitals is treated.
