Knobloch, Eberhard (Author)
When Alexander von Humboldt returned to Berlin in 1827 he quickly began to promote the science of astronomy in the Prussian capital. Humboldt's arguments, put forth in a memorial, persuaded the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III to grant the financial means necessary for buying Fraunhofer's last large refractor telescope, for ordering a meridian circle from Pistor, and a chronometer form Tiede, as well as for constructing a new observatory in Berlin-Kreuzberg to house all of these newly acquired instruments. This article is based on previously unknown archival material kept in the Prussian State Archives. In the Appendix, Humboldt's memorial is published for the first time.
