Örat som medicinsk teknik (2004)

unapi

The Technology of Medical Listening Though medical technologies are hardly associated with experience, the ability of educating and using the examiner's own body as an instrument in physical examination and diagnosing processes was highly technical. The early 19th century clinic brought forward several technologies, based on the senses, such as inspection, percussion, auscultation and palpation. The project of gradually sensibilising and training sight, hearing and touch (éducation médicale des sens) was complex, aiming at fine differentiation and combination of signs. This production of knowledge has not yet been systematically studied. Auscultation is here discussed as an illustrative example of a new set of representative medical practices, which were at the same time technical and cultural, thereby radically transforming the medical encounter.
