Send the smoke towards Russia! On the construction of Europe's tallest smokestack at Rönnskär When the Boliden Mining Company started their smelting works by the North-Swedish coast in the late 1920s, they feared local environmental opinions and possibly also demand for harder legislation. Boliden constructed a tall smokestack they thought could disperse effluent in the air. In imagination, it sent the smoke towards Sweden's old archenemy Russia. Inspiration came primarily from Anaconda, Montana, where the world's tallest smokestack had contributed to moderate opinions, though ended the problems. The 145-meter smokestack became Europe's tallest, but could not avoid local damages. The company compensated landowners in the 1930s, but if they succeeded better or worse out of their own intentions is a difficult question. As in Montana, however, the mining company was viewed as a guarantee for future prosperity in the region and environmental issues probably became secondary. But for the affected, environmental problems were of course highly present.
