Making Diagrams Speak, in Bhāskara I's Commentary on the Āryabhatīya (2005)

unapi

This article is a survey of the numerous questions raised by the diagrams in a seventh-century Sanskrit mathematical commentary. Exploring the links between the original text, the manuscripts, and the edition of Bhaskara I's Aryabha?iyabha?ya, the enquiry ranges from the tools employed to draw geometrical figures to the diverse functions that were assigned to drawings in geometry. Whether technical objects set down on a working surface or testimonies of an oral explanation, diagrams deal with a part of mathematical reasoning which was not formulated through written speech.
