“Sur le concept de nombre en mathématique”: Cours inédit de Leopold Kronecker à Berlin (1891) (2001)

unapi

The text published here is the last lecture course, on the notion of number in mathematics, taught by the Berlin mathematician Leopold Kronecker (1823-1891). These lectures, published here for the first time, give interesting insights into Kronecker's philosophy of mathematics and in particular into his concept of number. They clarify Kronecker's position within the movement of `arithmetization' and allow, in particular, for a better understanding of why and how Kronecker opposed the dominant viewpoint within this movement (held by Weierstrass, Cantor, Dedekind, and others). Kronecker introduced whole numbers mathematically, and proposed to integrate all of algebra and analysis into arithmetic. Today certain positions held by Kronecker may be seen as anticipating constructivist or intuitionist principles of the twentieth century.
