Di, Li (Author)
Considering the inaccurateness of the Datong calendar in predictions of eclipses towards the end of the Ming dynasty(1368-1644), Xu Guangqi (1562-1633) strived to carry out calendar reform and to promote the program of introducing western astronomy and calendar. The Chongzhen Lishu(Astronomical Compendium of the Chongzhen Reign),a set of western treatises on mathematics and astronomy, therefore, was translated and compiled by Jesuit missionaries under the organization of Xu Guangqi. This was the largest program for introducing western scientific knowledge into China. After Xu died in 1633, Li Tianjing(1579-1659) succeeded him in change of the compilation and translation work. New calendar had not finished. ?Nevertheless? the Ming Dynasty ended. The present paper deals with mainly the evaluation of the program, instead of the contents introduced.
...MoreDescription On the efforts by Xu Guangqi (1562--1633) to reform the calendar and promote Western astronomy, through a program of translation and compilation by Jesuit missionaries.
