Scientific research in the Engineering Institute of Academia Sinica (1928-1937) and in the Institute of Metallurgy and Ceramics of the CAS (1949-1958) were compared. The result showed that research direction of the institute had changed when the Engineering Institute was transformed into the Institute of Metallurgy and Ceramics. At the same time, relationship between the institute and the national economy development had also changed. Which indicated the Academia Sinica and the CAS had different comprehend on the value of science, and played different role on the development of economy.
