Klemun, Marianne (Author)
In the earlier history of science, politics, science, and the public used to be considered as entirely separate areas. Those unbridgeable gaps that were said to lie between them should now be rejected. In the course of the growing significance of scientific systems for the state and society, science and the state, by establishing common institutions, entered into various relationships in different countries. Prior to such a wave of state-directed institutionalisation, a supraterritorial and supranational form of organisation was born for the German Territories, in which not a state but a new 'imagined' nation, the 'German Nation', was to provide the supporting framework. Starting in 1822, those meetings, called Versammlung deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte took place annually in a number of different cities within the borders of the 'German Bund', with the meetings acting as an instrument of integration on various levels: (1) on a geographical-political and a national level, (2) on a public level, but also (3) on a level of consciousness, by trying to reunite all the natural sciences. Moreover, the position of the sciences towards various publics with their complex correlations was directed consciously at the respective venues during the meetings since, in public, the institutions were presented as an indication of progress. The part that was played by earth sciences in this multilayered context of politics, the public, and research will be analysed on the basis of the 1837 congregation in Prague.
