Magia y cultos orientales: acerca de una defixio de Alcácer do Sal (Setúbal) con mención de Atis (2004)

unapi

During the excavations in 1995 of a Roman sanctuary in Alcacer do Sal (the ancient Salacia) the first "defixio" attested in Portugal was found in a ritual pool. Datable to the second half of the first century AD, this tabella belongs to the category of the "prayers for justice" or imprecatory texts against theives - which are typically depositied in sanctuaries or sacred springs, mentions the god Attis ( as well as his Nocturnus, and the deity receiving Attis' body) and documents clear relations between the magical ritual and the Graeco-oriental religions, and particularly the Great Mother's cult.
