In the Horn of an Ox: A Curious Hexametrical Curse from Hellenistic Cyrene (SGD 150) (2004)

unapi

A hexametrical lead curse from Hellenistic Cyrene invokes Tycha and "Praxidika, daughter of Aglaokarpos" and ends with the curious phrase "I hereby deposit these [words] in an ox-horn and beneath the hoary earth." Scholars have traditionally argued that the curse invokes Persephone, daughter of Demeter, bothe of whom are very important deities at Cyrene, but in this article I argue that the hexametrical text originally ended with the phrase "beneath the hoary sea" and invoked the sea-nymph Tycha. So interpreted, the text allows us to sketch a poorly represented Greek tradition of invoking maritime gods in binding spells and depositing them in the sea.
