Chen, Zhihui (Author)
There are several versions of Kongji Gezhi which were originally translated by Alfonso Vagnone,S. J. in late Ming dynasty. The book was circulated by means of several manuscripts in Qing Dynasty. After the relationship among these versions is sorted,a copy commented by Shao Zeng( 1832-1877) and now collected by Shanghai Library is introduced in this paper. Shao Zeng was not only a traditional Confucian, but also an aide of Huai Army under Li Hongzhang( 1823-1901). Impelled by Li Hongzhang who was actively engaged in learning Western science and technology,Shao Zeng highly valued the contents of Western learning in general, such as the four-elements theory in Kongji Gezhi. It shows that the western books translated in late Ming exerted an impact on Chinese Literati who were eager to learn science in Late Qing.
