Nel territorio governato dalla Repubblica Ligure, tra XVIII e XIX secolo, la creazione dell'Università di Genova fu accompagnata dalla diffusione della cultura illuminista e della fondazione delle prime accademie scientifiche e dei primi circoli culturali. I maggiori scienziati che operarono in ambito ligure furono l'inglese William Batt, Cesare Nicolò Canefri e, in particolare, Domenico Viviani, tutti profondamente interessati alla medicina come alla storia naturale, alla chimica come alla fisica. I loro interessi si rivolsero anche alla diffusa e stratificata pratica sociale del collezionismo, conservando sempre intatti tutti i crismi del patronage aristocratico.
