Wolters, Gereon (Author)
Jonas insists that living nature is more than physical nature and that the 'soul', or the 'mental' (as most of us prefer to say these days) is more than just pure spirit. The physical and the mental cannot be separated when it comes to living nature. "The fact of life, as the psycho-physical unity which the organism exhibits, renders the separation illusory." Consequently, for Jonas, the belief that one can arrive at an adequate scientific understanding of the living either exclusively through the methods of physical science or through a completely idealistic philosophy of mind is illusory. In both of these monistic attempts the materialist and the idealist both fail--and for the same reason.
