From page 12: One of the most important conclusions Brockliss draws from the material presented in this essay is that the widely accepted picture of 17th century Aristotelianism as a dynamic and plastic philosophy capable of embracing the new science and of constructing alternatives to chemical or mechanical philosophies may be an exaggeration. If we look at the internal and external factors shaping the way Harvey's and Torricelli's work was absorbed into Aristotelian physics in France, one can see that the professors of philosophy were on the back foot from the beginning of the century on. They were increasingly forced to give up all but the most fundamental Aristotelian principles.
