The nature of nature in early modern Europe (1998)

unapi

Description “My aim in this paper is to address two questions raised by the intersection of the grand narrative of disenchantment with the new historiography of the Scientific Revolution. First, if nature wielded cultural authority in early modern Europe, what were the sources (and limits) of that authority? What were the meanings and values of nature for the learned and the powerful during this period? Second, what is the logic (and psychology) of the historical argument for the centrality of legitimation to the Scientific Revolution? Does this argument square with the resources that early modern views of nature actually supplied?”
