Description “Bergson est l'objet de plusieurs tentatives récentes de réactualisation qui attribuent à son oeuvre une dimension scientifique. Il peut donc être intéressant d'examiner de près et sur un exemple précis la manière dont il traite les sciences. Dans le Chapitre 1er de L'Évolution créatrice (1907), il prétend promouvoir la métaphysique de l'Élan Vital à partir de l'identité supposée entre l'oeil du Peigne, alias Coquille St. Jacques, et l'oeil des vertébrés, dont la biologie ne pourrait pas fournir une explication rationnelle. Or on sait aujourd'hui que cette identité n'existe pas et on le savait aussi dès le début du siècle: le philosophe s'est donc gardé de vérifier le bien-fondé de ses affirmations, procédé typique d'une méthode philosophique largement répandue.”
