Eugenic anxieties, social realities, and political choices (1992)

unapi

Description “The past two years have witnessed publication of a raft of popular books celebrating the genome initiative. Nearly all focus on its promise for medicine. None questions whether mapping and sequencing the whole human genome represents a cost-effective way to prevent or cure disease. Their authors warn of the need to guard against a resurgence of eugenics. They do not say what they mean by eugenics or why it is bad. The answers to both questions are generally believed to be obvious. The burden of this essay is to show they are not--and to explore some political implications of these undefended assumptions.”
