Ralph Cudworth in the République des lettres: The controversy about plastick nature and the reputation of Pierre Bayle (1994)
Description Concerning Jean Le Clerc's 1703 translation and publication of extensive sections of Cudworth's The true intellectual system of the universe (1678), with special attention to “Cudworth's doctrine of `plastic nature', which posited the existence in the universe of a certain `lower life', a creative spiritual force which, while lacking any will of its own, or consciousness of its operations, acts purposefully to execute laws and commands prescribed to it by the Divine Intellect.” Bayle responded to Le Clerc's arguments in his Continuation des pensées diverses sur la comète (1704).
