Quantum numbers and electron spin: The history of a discovery (1990)

unapi

Description “The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the birth of the mechanical concept of spin, with special reference to the various quantum numbers used in and around 1924. This analysis shows that spin certainly did arise from a process that began in Pauli's work on the exclusion principle, but that this process was different from those described above, being directly related to Uhlenbeck and Goudsmit's research and of such a nature as to render secondary all the questions about why Pauli didn't arrive at the conclusions on spin as he ought to have done according to standard historical reconstructions.”
