Feldman, Theodore S. (Author)
Description “The origins of barometric hypsometry [the measurement of heights from differences in atmospheric pressure] lay in applied mathematics, from which it did not migrate to experimental physics until the mid-18th century. Its successful employment in surveying after 1770 renewed the connection with applied mathematics. Barometric hypsometry thus presents a good opportunity to study the interaction of applied mathematics and experimental physics in the early modern period.”
