Description “The present article presents and discusses the arguments for and against the well-known historical thesis, according to which Eudoxus' theory of proportions fully anticipated modern theories of the irrational numbers, such as Dedekind's or Weierstrass'. Special stress is laid upon Dedekind's theory of cuts, and upon Dedekind's own interpretation of the putative connection between his theory and Eudoxus'. This interpretation throws new light upon interesting aspects of the historiographical dispute concerning Eudoxus and Dedekind, and of nineteenth century mathematics as well.” From the English abstract.
