Description “I begin by demonstrating how the theoretical syntheses sought by two German zoologists of the interwar period, Alfred Kühn and Richard Woltereck, were constructed upon an anti-reductionist metaphysics. The following section considers whether the architects of the evolutionary synthesis might have endorsed a similar metaphysics. In the conclusion I explore how study of the evolutionary synthesis from this perspective might shed light on a more general question: the heuristic function performed by metaphysical assumptions in the biological sciences.”
