Description “In order to put Bohr's intervention on this subject [Pickering series] into perspective, I have reconstructed the relevant situation in spectroscopy from 1897, when only three months after its discovery, Pickering's series was attributed to hydrogen, to 1915, when, only two years after Bohr's intervention, spectroscopists had transferred it definitively to helium. In this paper I trace the way the same spectral lines, i.e., the same empirical data, changed in meaning while preserving their quantitative values.”
